300. BEWARE of acquaintances from whom thou canst learn no good.

ואמר ישיבת חבורה רעה מקנה המדות הרעות:
301. Intercourse with worthless associates engenders evil manners.

ואמר במה יבחן המשכיל את נפשו? [אמר שיסבול חברת] אשה רעה:
302. The sage was asked, How can a discreet man test his own temper? To which he replied, By the patient endurance of a bad wife.

ואמר האשה הרעה כמו הזאב שמחליף שערו ואינו מחליף טבעו.
303. A bad wife may be compared to a wolf, that changes its coat, but not its nature.

ואמר הרע שבמתחברים שקונה האדם האשה הרעה והיא חבורה:
304. The most dangerous alliance is consorting with a bad woman— that is indeed a deep wound.

ואמר הזהר משבת עם הכסיל. כי כמה פעמים הפסיד [הכסיל]. את הענין:
305. Avoid the companionship of the arrogant, for often has it contaminated the meek and unassuming.

ואמר כשתשב שב עם הנדיבים. כי אין כבודו של אדם וקלונו אלא באיש ישיבתו:
306. He used to say, Let thine intercourse be with the noble and liberal-minded; for both the honour and disgrace of man are the natural results of his associates.

ואמר מי שהכניס עצמו בדבר רע. ישיגהו החשד.
307. He who enters on evil designs will be suspected.

ואמר מי שיביא עצמו אל החשד אל יאשים מי שמחשב עליו רע:
308. He who has incurred suspicion, dares not complain of harsh criticism.

ואמר שב עם החכמים והאזן אל חידותם ואל יסורו מלבבך:
309. Associate with the wise, listen to their sayings, and depart not from them.

ואמר מה הוא טוב לאדם? אמר שכל שיהיה בו. ואם לא יהיה השכל. הממון שיתהדר בו. ואם לא יהיה הממון. האשה שתכסה על מומיו. ואם לא תהיה האשה. השתיקה שתכסה על מומיו. ואם לא תהיה השתיקה. הקבר טוב לו:
310. What is most advantageous to man? The sage replied, Either the possession of good sense, or worldly means that are productive of respect, a wife that will screen his faults, or silence that will hide his failings,—but better the grave than the absence of all these.

ואמר ארבעה מאבדים את האדם. הגאוה. וההקשות. והעצלה. והמהירות:
311. They used to say, Four propensities destroy mankind—pride, waywardness, indolence, and rashness.
אמר החכם הזהר מישיבה אצל מי שלא תלמוד ממנו טוב.
