בעבור שמעלת דרך ארץ מידה חשובה עד מאד ויקרה אצל בני אדם והיא מעלת מידה כללית וכוללת כל שאר מעלות המידות הרוחניות והגופניות ונמשכות עמה ולה פארות וענפים יוצאין לכאן ולכאן, לפיכך איחרתי אותה וכתבתיה בסוף כל שאר המעלות מלבד מעלת השלום שאיחרתי וכתבתי אותה בסוף כל הספר כולו כדי להשלימו ולחתום בו בשלום.
Because the virtue of derech eretz (proper conduct) is an exceedingly important and precious quality among people, and it is a comprehensive virtue that encompasses all other spiritual and physical character traits, drawing them along with it and branching out into many directions like branches and offshoots, I therefore placed it later and wrote about it after all the other virtues, except for the virtue of peace, which I placed and wrote about at the very end of the entire book, in order to complete it and seal it with peace.
