Pisqa’ 15470H:190; JN2:20. 1. “And you shall behave according to the ruling” (Dt.17:10). Those who violate the instructions of the High Court in Jerusalem are liable for execution; but there is no threat of execution for violating the instructions of the court in Yavneh.
“According to the sense of the Torah that they shall teach you” (Dt.17:11). Those who violate rulings of the Torah are liable for execution; but there is no threat of execution for violating scribal traditions.
(דברים יז י) וְעָשִׂיתָ עַל פִּי הַדָּבָר, עַל הוֹרָיַת בֵּית דִּין הַגָּדוֹל שֶׁבִּירוּשָׁלִַם חַיָּבִים מִיתָה, וְאֵין חַיָּבִים מִיתָה עַל הוֹרָיַת בֵּית דִּין שֶׁבְּיַבְנֶה.

(דברים יז יא) ״עַל פִּי הַתּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר יוֹרוּךָ״, עַל דִּבְרֵי תוֹרָה חַיָּבִים מִיתָה וְאֵין חַיָּבִים מִיתָה עַל דִּבְרֵי סוֹפְרִים.
“According to the sense of the Torah that they shall teach you” (Dt.17:11).

וְעַל הַמִּשְׁפָּט אֲשֶׁר יֹאמְרוּ לְךָ תַּעֲשֶׂה – מִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה.
“And according to the rule which they explain to you must you act” (Dt.17:11)—
this refers to a prescriptive commandment.
לֹא תָסוּר מִן הַתּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר יַגִּידוּ לְךָ – מִצְוַת לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה.
“Do not deviate from the Torah they shall impart to you” (Dt.17:11)—
this refers to a proscriptive commandment.
יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאל – אֲפִילּוּ מַרְאִים בְּעֵינֶיךָ עַל יָמִין שֶׁהוּא שְׂמֹאל וְעַל שְׂמֹאל שֶׁהוּא יָמִין – שְׁמַע לָהֶם!
“To the right or the left” (Dt.17:11)—
even if, before your very eyes,
they instruct that right is left, or left is right,
you must obey them.
