נט. תחנה

שַׁעֲרֵי שָׁמַיִם בְּלוּלֵי אֵשׁ וּמַיִם. שְׁלשׁ מֵאוֹת וְתִשְׁעִים כְּמִנְיַן שָׁמַיִם. הִפָּתְחוּ לְחִנּוּן יְפַת פַּעֲמַיִם. וְתַעַל תְּפִלָּתָם לְאֵל הַשָּׁמָיִם:

Gates of heaven, which are compounded of fire and water, numbering three hundred and ninety, [which is] the number of the letters in the word שָׁמַיִם;¹ש = 300, מ = 40 י = 10 ם = 40. open to the supplication of Israel, and let their prayers go up to the Almighty in the heavens.

שַׁעֲרֵי רָקִיעַ בּוֹ מְאוֹרוֹת הִתְקִיעַ. וּמִמֶּנּוּ זוֹרְחִים בִּמְקוֹמָם לְהַשְׁקִיעַ. הִפָּתְחוּ לְחִנּוּן יָם לָמוֹ הִבְקִיעַ. וְתַעַל תְּפִלָּתָם פְּנֵי מַעֲבִיב רָקִיעַ:

Gates of the firmament in which the luminaries²The sun, moon and stars etc. are fixed, from where they shine and where they set; open to the supplication of those for whom He divided the [Reed] Sea, and let their prayers go up to Him Who wraps the firmament in clouds.

שַׁעֲרֵי זְבוּל שֶׁבּוֹ מִזְבֵּחַ סָבוּל. וְהַשַּׂר מַקְטִיר עָלָיו כִּמְכַהֵן בְּכַרְבּוּל. הִפָּתְחוּ לְחִנּוּן נִדְחָקִים בְּחִבּוּל. וְתַעַל תְּפִלָּתָם פְּנֵי יָשַׁב לַמַּבּוּל:

Gates of the heavenly Palace wherein stands the Altar of the heavenly Temple,³Which corresponds to the early Temple. upon which [Michael] the Prince offers incense, as did the High Priest wearing his mitre; open to the supplication of those who are painfully oppressed, and let their prayer go up to Him Who sat enthroned even at the flood.⁴When mankind was destroyed. See Genesis 7:23.

שַׁעֲרֵי וִילוֹן, נִכְנָס וְיוֹצֵא בְּגִלָּלוֹן. וּמְחַדֵּשׁ בְּכָל־יוֹם מִפְתְּחֵי חַלּוֹן. הִפָּתְחוּ לְחִנּוּן מַצַּבְתָּהּ כָּאַלּוֹן. וְתַעַל תְּפִלָּתָם פְּנֵי דָר רוּם וִילוֹן:

Gates of Vilon⁵Lit. curtain, which is withdrawn at day permitting the light to go out and closed at night, causing darkness. that open and close and cause the daily renewal of the sun’s appearance through the opening of the aperture; open to the supplication of those who are firm as an oak⁶I.e. strong in their faith. and let their prayers go up to Him Who resides in the heights of Vilon.

שַׁעֲרֵי שְׁחָקִים שֶׁבּוֹ רֵחַיִם שׁוֹחֲקִים. עוֹמְדוֹת וְטוֹחֲנוֹת, מָן לַצַּדִּיקִים. הִפָּתְחוּ לְחִנּוּן זְרוּיִּים בְּמֶרְחַקִּים. וְתַעַל תְּפִלָּתָם פְּנֵי שׁוֹכֵן שְׁחָקִים:

Gates of Shechakim, wherein there is a mill which continually grinds preparing Mannah for the righteous;⁷In the next world. open to the supplication of those who are scattered afar⁸In exile. and let their prayers go up to Him Who dwells in the clouds.

שַׁעֲרֵי מָכוֹן שֶׁבּוֹ שְׁלָגִים יִתְכּוֹן. וּמְעָרַת קִיטוֹר וְסַעַר בּוֹ יִשְׁכּוֹן. הִפָּתְחוּ לְחִנּוּן עַם לִבּוֹ יִכּוֹן. וְתַעַל תְּפִלָּתָם פְּנֵי דָר רוּם מָכוֹן:

Gates of Machon⁹Lit. establishment the sixth of the seven heavens. wherein the snows are prepared, where the cave of thick smoke and the storms dwell; open to the supplication of the people whose heart is steadfast,¹⁰With God. and let their prayers go up to Him Who resides in the heights of Machon.

שַׁעֲרֵי מָעוֹן בּוֹ מְשׁוֹרְרִים יִשְׁעוּן. וּבַיּוֹם הֵם חָשִׁים לְסֶגֶל יִשְׁמְעוּן. הִפָּתְחוּ לְחִנּוּן לִמְרָרִים לִלְּעוֹן. וְתַעַל תְּפִלָּתָם פְּנֵי דָר רוּם מָעוֹן:

Gates of the Habitation where the angels sing at night but are silent in the daytime to hear to the prayers of the treasured people; open to the supplication of those whose lives are bitter as wormwood, and let their prayers go up to Him Who resides in the heights of Maon.

שַׁעֲרֵי עֲרָבוֹת שֶׁבּוֹ בְּרָכוֹת רַבּוֹת. וְגִנְזֵי צְדָקָה וָחֶסֶד וְכָל־טוֹבוֹת. הִפָּתְחוּ לְחִנּוּן בְּנֵי שְׁלֹשֶׁת אָבוֹת. וְתַעַל תְּפִלָּתָם פְּנֵי רוֹכֵב עֲרָבוֹת:

Gates of Aravos¹¹Lit. thick clouds. wherein are found the plentitude of blessings, the treasures of righteousness and kindliness, and all good things; open to the supplication of the children of the three Patriarchs, and let their prayers go up to Him Who rides on thick clouds.

מַכְנִיסֵי רַחֲמִים. הַכְנִיסוּ רַחֲמֵינוּ, לִפְנֵי בַּעַל־הָרַחֲמִים. מַשְׁמִיעֵי תְפִלָּה. הַשְׁמִיעוּ תְפִלָּתֵנוּ, לִפְנֵי שׁוֹמֵעַ תְּפִלָּה: מַשְׁמִיעֵי צְעָקָה. הַשְׁמִיעוּ צַעֲקָתֵנוּ, לִפְנֵי שׁוֹמֵעַ צְעָקָה: מַכְנִיסֵי דִּמְעָה. הַכְנִיסוּ דִמְעוֹתֵינוּ, לִפְנֵי מֶלֶךְ מִתְרַצֶּה בִּדְמָעוֹת: הִשְׁתַּדְּלוּ וְהַרְבּוּ תְחִנָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה, לִפְנֵי מֶלֶךְ אֵל רָם וְנִשָּׂא: הַזְכִּירוּ לְפָנָיו הַשְׁמִיעוּ לְפָנָיו, תּוֹרָה וּמַעֲשִׂים־טוֹבִים שֶׁל שׁוֹכְנֵי־עָפָר: יִזְכֹּר אַהֲבָתָם, וִיחַיֶּה זַרְעָם שֶׁלֹּא תֹאבַד שְׁאֵרִית־יַעֲקֹב: כִּי־צֹאן רוֹעֶה־נֶאֱמָן הָיָה לְחֶרְפָּה, יִשְׂרָאֵל גּוֹי־אֶחָד לְמָשָׁל וְלִשְׁנִינָה: מַהֵר עֲנֵנוּ אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׁעֵנוּ, וּפְדֵנוּ מִכָּל־גְּזֵרוֹת קָשׁוֹת, וְהוֹשִׁיעָה בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּים, מְשִׁיחַ צִדְקָךְ וְעַמָּךְ:

Angels of mercy!¹¹Some authorities omit this prayer because they object to the idea of praying to angels. Bring our plea for compassion before the Presence of the Lord of mercy. Angels of prayer! Cause our prayers to be heard before Him Who hears prayer. Angels of weeping! Cause our cries to be heard before Him Who listens to cries. Angels of tears! bring our tears before the King Who is appeased by tears. Intercede for us and amplify supplication and entreaty before the King, Almighty, Who is exalted and uplifted. Mention before Him, cause Him to hear of the Torah learning and good deeds of our ancestors who repose in the dust. May He remember their love and give life to their descendants so that the remnant of Jacob will not perish; for the flock of the faithful shepherd has become a disgrace; Israel the unique nation [has become] an example and a byword [of humiliation]. Hasten and answer us, God of our deliverance, and redeem us from all harsh decrees, deliver in Your abundant mercy Your righteous annointed and Your people.

מָרָן דְּבִשְׁמַיָא לָךְ מִתְחַנֵּנָן, כְּבַר שִׁבְיָא דְמִתְחַנֵּן לִשְׁבוּיֵהּ: כֻּלְּהוֹן בְּנֵי־שִׁבְיָא בְּכַסְפָּא מִתְפָּרְקִין, וְעַמָּךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּרַחֲמֵי וּבְתַחֲנוּנֵי: הַב־לָן שְׁאֶלְתִּין וּבָעוּתִין, דְלָא־נֶהֱדַר רֵיקָם מִן־קָדָמָךְ:

Master in heaven, we beseech You, as a captive implores his captor. All captives are ransomed with money, but Your people Israel [are redeemed] through compassion and supplication. Grant our petition and our request, that we not return empty-handed from before You.

מָרָן דְבִשְׁמַיָא לָךְ מִתְחַנֵּנָן, כְּעַבְדָּא דְּמִתְחַנֵּן לְמָרֵיהּ: עֲשִׁיקֵי אֲנַן וּבַחֲשׁוֹכָא שָׁרִינָן. מְרִירָן נַפְשִׁין מֵעַקְתִין דִּנְפִישִׁין: חֵילָא לֵית־בָּן לְרַצוּיָךְ. מָרָן. עֲבִיד בְּדִיל קַיָּמָא דִגְזַרְתְּ עִם־אֲבְהָתָנָא:

Master in heaven, we beseech You, as a slave implores his master. We are oppressed and live in darkness, our souls are grieved from great affliction. We don’t have the strength to appease You, Master, do it for the sake of the covenant, which You made with our forefathers.

שׁוֹמֵר יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁמוֹר שְׁאֵרִית יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאַל יֹאבַד יִשְׂרָאֵל הָאֹמְרִים שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל:

Guardian of Israel, guard the remnant of Israel, and let not Israel perish, who say, “Hear Israel.”

שׁוֹמֵר גּוֹי אֶחָד שְׁמוֹר שְׁאֵרִית עַם אֶחָד וְאַל יֹאבַד גּוֹי אֶחָד הַמְיַחֲדִים שִׁמְךָ יְהֹוָה אֱלֺהֵֽינוּ יְהֹוָה אֶחָד:

Guardian of the unique nation guard the remnant of the unique people and let not the unique nation perish, who proclaim the Oneness of Your Name, [saying:] Adonoy is our God, Adonoy is One.

שׁוֹמֵר גּוֹי קָדוֹשׁ שְׁמוֹר שְׁאֵרִית עַם קָדוֹשׁ וְאַל יֹאבַד גּוֹי קָדוֹשׁ הַמְשַׁלְּשִׁים בְּשָׁלשׁ קְדֻשּׁוֹת לְקָדוֹשׁ:

Guardian of the holy nation, guard the remnant of the holy people and let not the holy nation perish who repeat the threefold sanctification to the Holy One.

מִתְרַצֶּה בְּרַחֲמִים וּמִתְפַּיֵּס בְּתַחֲנוּנִים הִתְרַצֶּה וְהִתְפַּיֵּס לְדוֹר עָנִי כִּי אֵין עוֹזֵר:

You Who are appeased by pleas for mercy, are conciliated by supplications be appeased and conciliated to an afflicted generation for there is none else to help.

אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ חָנֵּֽנוּ וַעֲנֵֽנוּ כִּי אֵין בָּֽנוּ מַעֲשִׂים עֲשֵׂה עִמָּֽנוּ צְדָקָה וָחֶֽסֶד וְהוֹשִׁיעֵֽנוּ:

Our Father, our King! be gracious to us and answer us for we have no [good] deeds: deal with us charitably and kindly and deliver us.

וַאֲנַֽחְנוּ לֺא נֵדַע מַה נַּעֲשֶׂה כִּי עָלֶֽיךָ עֵינֵֽינוּ: זְכֹר רַחֲמֶֽיךָ יְהֹוָה וַחֲסָדֶֽיךָ כִּי מֵעוֹלָם הֵֽמָּה: יְהִי חַסְדְּ֒ךָ יְהֹוָה עָלֵֽינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר יִחַֽלְנוּ לָךְ: אַל תִּזְכָּר לָֽנוּ עֲוֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים מַהֵר יְקַדְּמֽוּנוּ רַחֲמֶֽיךָ כִּי דַלּֽוֹנוּ מְאֹד: (עֶזְרֵנוּ בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה עֹשֵׂה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ׃) חָנֵּֽנוּ יְהֹוָה חָנֵּֽנוּ כִּי־רַב שָׂבַֽעְנוּ בוּז: בְּרֺֽגֶז רַחֵם תִּזְכּוֹר: (בְּרֹֽגֶז עַקֵדָה תִּזְכּוֹר: בְּרֹֽגֶז תְּמִימוֹת תִּזְכּוֹר: יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה, הַמֶּֽלֶךְ יַעֲנֵֽנוּ בְיוֹם קָרְאֵֽנוּ:) כִּי הוּא יָדַע יִצְרֵֽנוּ זָכוּר כִּי עָפָר אֲנָֽחְנוּ: עָזְרֵֽנוּ אֱלֺהֵי יִשְׁעֵֽנוּ עַל־דְּבַר כְּבוֹד־שְׁמֶֽךָ וְהַצִּילֵֽנוּ וְכַפֵּר עַל־חַטֹּאתֵֽינוּ לְמַֽעַן שְׁמֶֽךָ:

As for us, we know not what to do; but our eyes are upon You. Remember Your mercies, Adonoy, and kindnesses for they are from the beginning of the world. Adonoy! may Your kindness be upon us, as we have waited for You. Remember not the sins of our ancestors; let Your mercy come swiftly toward us, for we have been brought very low. Help us for the Name of Adonoy Creator of Heaven and earth. Be gracious to us, Adonoy, be gracious to us for we are saturated with humiliation. [Even] in anger remember to have compassion. [Even] in anger remember the binding of Isaac. Even in anger remember the uprightness of Jacob Adonoy deliver [us] the King will answer us on the day we call. For He knows of what we are made; He is mindful that we are but dust. Help us, God of our deliverance, for the sake of the glory of Your Name; save us and atone our sins, for the sake of Your Name.

יִתְגַּדֵּל וְיִתְקַדֵּשׁ שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא: בְּעָלְמָא דִּי בְרָא כִרְעוּתֵהּ וְיַמְלִיךְ מַלְכוּתֵהּ וְיַצְמַח פּוּרְקָנֵהּ וִיקָרֵב (קֵץ) מְשִׁיחֵהּ: בְּחַיֵּיכוֹן וּבְיוֹמֵיכוֹן וּבְחַיֵּי דְכָל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, בַּעֲגָלָא וּבִזְמַן קָרִיב וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:

Exalted and sanctified be His great Name in the world which He created according to His will and may He rule His kingdom bring forth His redemption and hasten the coming of His Mashiach in your lifetime and in your days, and in the lifetime of the entire House of Israel, speedily and in the near future— and say Amein.

יְהֵא שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא מְבָרַךְ לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְמֵי עָלְמַיָּא: יִתְבָּרַךְ וְיִשְׁתַּבַּח וְיִתְפָּאַר וְיִתְרוֹמַם וְיִתְנַשֵּׂא וְיִתְהַדָּר וְיִתְעַלֶּה וְיִתְהַלָּל שְׁמֵהּ דְקוּדְשָׁא, בְּרִיךְ הוּא: לְעֵֽלָּא וּלְעֵֽלָּא מִכָּל בִּרְכָתָא וְשִׁירָתָא, תֻּשְׁבְּחָתָא וְנֶחֱמָתָא, דַּאֲמִירָן בְּעָלְמָא, וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:

May His great Name be blessed forever and for all eternity. Blessed and praised, glorified, and exalted and uplifted, honored and elevated and extolled be the Name of the Holy One, blessed is He; far above all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations which we utter in the world—and say Amein.

תִּתְקַבֵּל צְלוֹתְהוֹן וּבָעוּתְהוֹן דְּכָל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל קֳדָם אֲבוּהוֹן דִּי בִשְׁמַיָּא וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:

May there be acceptance of the prayers and supplications of the entire House of Israel before their Father in heaven. And say, Amein.

יְהֵא שְׁלָמָא רַבָּא מִן שְׁמַיָּא וְחַיִּים עָלֵֽינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:

May there be abundant peace from heaven and life for us and for all Israel, —and say Amen.

עוֹשֶׂה הַשָּׁלוֹם בִּמְרוֹמָיו הוּא יַעֲשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם עָלֵינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:

He Who makes the peace in His high heavens may He, make peace for us and for all Israel, and say, Amein.
