Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Erev Rosh Hashana, Chapter 18

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbi Solomon ben Menachem.

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

    Thirteen Divine attributes

  4. 4

    הָאֲמוּרוֹת בַּחֲנִינָה.

    which were pronounced with compassion;

  5. 5

by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  6. 6

I beseech the Presence of my King

  7. 7

    with supplication,

  8. 8

to search for the merit [of Israel]

  9. 9

who were named and called the Rose.

  10. 10

    Save them from all evil

  11. 11

    in this year.

  12. 12

If their guilt be so great

  13. 13

as to reach the heavens and their stars,

  14. 14

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  15. 15

I plead for mercy for them,

  16. 16

to annul for them what is written:1Deut. 32:26.

  17. 17

“I said I will scatter them etc.”

  18. 18

    Why should the nations say,

  19. 19

    “Where is their God?”2Psalms 115:2.

  20. 20

    If their iniquities are grievous

  21. 21

    and too many to count,

  22. 22

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute

  23. 23

    דְּחֵה אוֹתָם יְהֹוָה לְהַסְתִּירָה.

    cast them away, Adonoy, and conceal them;

  24. 24

let our vigorous words of supplication

  25. 25

    annul that which is written:

  26. 26

“I will hide [my face from them].”3Deut. 32:20.

  27. 27

Why, Adonoy, do You stand far off,

  28. 28

hiding Yourself in times of trouble?4Psalms 10:1.

  29. 29

    If they have acted perversely

  30. 30

in the Presence of their King,

  31. 31

    בְּעַזּוּת־פָּנִים וּמֵצַח.

    with a brazen face;

  32. 32

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  33. 33

I offer supplication with a loud voice,

  34. 34

    [and say to] my soul:

  35. 35

“Pour out your heart as water”5Lamentations 2:19.

  36. 36

    in the presence of Him

  37. 37

“Who is pure white and ruddy.”6Song of Songs 5:10.

  38. 38

“Why, God, have You cast us off forever.”7Psalms 74:1.

  39. 39

    If willful sins have misled

  40. 40

    לֵב־טִפֵּשׁ וְנִשְׁחַץ.

    the foolish and haughty heart;

  41. 41

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  42. 42

save them, Adonoy, from crushing wounds,

  43. 43

    hasten and come,

  44. 44

and lift up the strong voice [of redemption]

  45. 45

“Why do I go mourning under oppression.”8Psalms 42:10.

  46. 46

    If they have slandered

  47. 47

in words and thoughts against You,

  48. 48

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  49. 49

remember the love of those who praise You

  50. 50

and let Your compassion be moved

  51. 51

towards the remnant of Your people.

  52. 52

    “Why should Your anger burn

  53. 53

    against Your people.”9Exodus 32:11.

  54. 54

If they harden their ear [from hearing]

  55. 55

    and pervert their way,

  56. 56

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  57. 57

I offer silent prayer for my people,

  58. 58

and my soul—pour out your heart

  59. 59

in the Presence of your Possessor and Rock.

  60. 60

“Why have You broken down her fences,

  61. 61

so that all wayfarers pluck her fruit.”10Psalms 80:13.

  62. 62

If they have rebelled with great transgression

  63. 63

    לְצוּר מַלְכִּי וּקְדוֹשִׁי.

    against the Rock, my King, my Holy One;

  64. 64

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  65. 65

    נַפְשִׁי נֹעַם עֲלֵיהֶם תְּבַקְּשִׁי.

    my soul—seek pleasantness for them;

  66. 66

    before the Awesome, Most High,

  67. 67

    and Holy One,

  68. 68

    address prayerful supplication.

  69. 69

    Why, Adonoy,

  70. 70

do You cast off my soul?11Psalms 88:15.

  71. 71

If they were stubborn like a heifer

  72. 72

    מֵרֹב עִתִּים וְיָמִים.

    from their many days and years [of exile];

  73. 73

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  74. 74

I will lift my eyes to the heavens,

  75. 75

and open my mouth in behalf of my people,

  76. 76

who are the fewest among peoples.

  77. 77

“Why do You forget us forever,

  78. 78

[and] forsake us for the length of days?”12Lamentations 5:20.

  79. 79

    If our transgressions are enormous

  80. 80

    and overwhelming as a mountain,

  81. 81

by virtue of every fitting attribute [I pray],

  82. 82

with a soft [birdlike] voice for wonders.

  83. 83

On Your refined [faithful] word,13That our prayers do not go unanswered. [I rely]

  84. 84

    to plead for this people.

  85. 85

“Why do You withdraw Your hand,

  86. 86

    even Your right hand?

  87. 87

Draw it from Your bosom to consume [evil].”14Psalms 74:11.

  88. 88

If they have perverted their actions

  89. 89

    willfully and wickedly,

  90. 90

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  91. 91

    רָחַשׁ לִבֵּךְ לְהוֹשִׁיעַ

    let Your heart be moved to deliver them;

  92. 92

“Arise cry out aloud in the night”15Lamentations 2:19.

  93. 93

    to the Almighty, the Deliverer.

  94. 94

“Why should You be like a man confused,

  95. 95

like a mighty man that cannot save.”16Jeremiah 14:9.

  96. 96

If in truth, all have repented

  97. 97

with their heart and soul to appease You,

  98. 98

[then] by virtue of every fitting attribute,

  99. 99

    תַּסְכִּים עִמָּם בִּמְחִילָתֶךָ.

    consent to pardon them;

  100. 100

and do it O Master for Your sake,

  101. 101

    forgive and pardon Your congregation.

  102. 102

“Return to us for the sake of Your servants,17The Patriarchs.

  103. 103

    the tribes of Your heritage.”

  104. 104

    Almighty! King!

  105. 105

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  106. 106

    governs with kindness

  107. 107

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  108. 108

He removes their sins one by one,

  109. 109

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  110. 110

    and pardon to transgressors.

  111. 111

    Acting righteously

  112. 112

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  113. 113

    not according to their wickedness

  114. 114

    does He repay them.

  115. 115

    Almighty!

  116. 116

    You instructed us to recite

  117. 117

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  118. 118

    remember unto us this day

  119. 119

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  120. 120

    as You made them known

  121. 121

to the humble Moses of old,

  122. 122

    as it is written,

  123. 123

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  124. 124

    and stood with him there,

  125. 125

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  126. 126

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  127. 127

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  128. 128

    and proclaimed:

  129. 129

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  130. 130

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  131. 131

    Slow to Anger,

  132. 132

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  133. 133

    Keeper of kindness

  134. 134

    for thousands of generations,

  135. 135

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  136. 136

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  137. 137

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  138. 138

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  139. 139

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  140. 140

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  141. 141

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  142. 142

    “For You, my Master,

  143. 143

    are good and forgiving,

  144. 144

    and abounding in kindness

  145. 145

to all who call upon You.”

  146. 146

Unto You Adonoy is our plea,

  147. 147

and in the morning our prayer is before You.

  148. 148

Adonoy, in the morning hear our voice,

  149. 149

in the morning we beseech You and hope.

  150. 150

My soul waits for my Master

  151. 151

    more than the watchman waits

  152. 152

    for the morning,

  153. 153

    [more than] the watchman [waits]

  154. 154

    for the morning.

  155. 155

    The [correct] offerings to God

  156. 156

    רוּחַ נִשְׁבָּרָה

    is a broken spirit;

  157. 157

    a broken and humbled heart,

  158. 158

    God will not despise.

  159. 159

As a father has compassion on his children

  160. 160

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  161. 161

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  162. 162

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  163. 163

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  164. 164

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  165. 165

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  166. 166

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  167. 167

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  168. 168

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  169. 169

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  170. 170

    in accordance with the greatness

  171. 171

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  172. 172

and as You forgave this people

  173. 173

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  174. 174

    And there it is said:

  175. 175

    “And Adonoy said,

  176. 176

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  177. 177

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  178. 178

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  179. 179

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  180. 180

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  181. 181

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  182. 182

but because of Your great mercy.

  183. 183

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  184. 184

My Master, listen and take action,

  185. 185

    do not delay!

  186. 186

    For Your sake, my God,

  187. 187

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  188. 188

over Your city and over Your people.
