Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Seventh Day, Chapter 3

‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

    The virgin daughter of Judah

  4. 4

is full of pain and sobbing,

  5. 5

    she bewails herself

  6. 6

[and] spreads her hands [in prayer]

  7. 7

from the depths of her captivity.

  8. 8

    From the narrowness [of distress]

  9. 9

    I call out to You,

  10. 10

    Answer me

  11. 11

    בַמֶּרְחָב יָהּ.

    with the breadth of Divine relief;

  12. 12

from out of fire and water

  13. 13

    bring her into safety.

  14. 14

She lifts her eyes for help,

  15. 15

    וּמַבֶּטֶת הֵנָּה וָהֵנָּה.

    she looks to all sides;

  16. 16

    she trembles [like a woman]

  17. 17

giving birth to her first child,

  18. 18

    her birth pains

  19. 19

are compounded by her delicate nature.

  20. 20

    She claps her hands,

  21. 21

    and murmurs in her thoughts:

  22. 22

    “Where now is my hope,

  23. 23

and [the fulfillment of] my hope

  24. 24

    who will see?”

  25. 25

The beloved of her soul and her Dwelling,

  26. 26

her ornament and pride [the Holy Temple]

  27. 27

have been given into the hands

  28. 28

    of those who revile her,

  29. 29

into the palms of those who afflict her.

  30. 30

They yell out amid their assemblies,

  31. 31

giving voice, they taunt her, saying:

  32. 32

“Where is the word of Adonoy?”

  33. 33

“Let it come now [and deliver them].”

  34. 34

From captivity to exile, driven and shattered

  35. 35

    אֲיֻמָּתֶךָ.

    is Your nation that was once feared;

  36. 36

[this resulted] from Your fierce anger

  37. 37

and the terror of Your wrath.

  38. 38

With her broken spirit and bitter voice,

  39. 39

    she cries out to You:

  40. 40

“Where is Your indignation and Your might?”

  41. 41

    You have abandoned Your people,

  42. 42

    the House of Israel,

  43. 43

    בְּאֶרֶץ שִׁבְיָם.

    in the land of their captivity;

  44. 44

they are tossed about in the enemies’ land

  45. 45

like a ship in the heart of the sea.

  46. 46

    Babes ask their fathers:

  47. 47

“Where are the wonders of the shepherd?”1Moses.

  48. 48

    Where is He

  49. 49

Who brought them out of the [Reed] Sea?

  50. 50

    Degenerates and non-entities

  51. 51

have trampled our inheritance [the Temple],

  52. 52

they have driven us far from our country

  53. 53

    וּמִגְּבוּל אַרְצֵנוּ.

    from the borders of our land;

  54. 54

we said: “We are cut off, our hope is lost.”

  55. 55

    “Where are all Your wonders

  56. 56

of which our fathers told us?”

  57. 57

Remember Adonoy to the sons of Edom,

  58. 58

    the destruction of Your Temple,

  59. 59

the shattering of my mighty ones

  60. 60

    and the dismemberment

  61. 61

    עוֹלְלֵי־קְהָלָךְ.

    of the infants of Your congregation;

  62. 62

uncover Your mighty arm—demand from them

  63. 63

an account of the flock of Your pasture:

  64. 64

“Where is the flock that was given you?”

  65. 65

    Almighty! King!

  66. 66

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  67. 67

    governs with kindness

  68. 68

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  69. 69

He removes their sins one by one,

  70. 70

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  71. 71

    and pardon to transgressors.

  72. 72

    Acting righteously

  73. 73

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  74. 74

    not according to their wickedness

  75. 75

    does He repay them.

  76. 76

    Almighty!

  77. 77

    You instructed us to recite

  78. 78

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  79. 79

    remember unto us this day

  80. 80

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  81. 81

    as You made them known

  82. 82

to the humble Moses of old,

  83. 83

    as it is written,

  84. 84

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  85. 85

    and stood with him there,

  86. 86

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  87. 87

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  88. 88

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  89. 89

    and proclaimed:

  90. 90

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  91. 91

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  92. 92

    Slow to Anger,

  93. 93

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  94. 94

    Keeper of kindness

  95. 95

    for thousands of generations,

  96. 96

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  97. 97

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  98. 98

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  99. 99

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  100. 100

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  101. 101

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  102. 102

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  103. 103

    “For You, my Master,

  104. 104

    are good and forgiving,

  105. 105

    and abounding in kindness

  106. 106

to all who call upon You.”

  107. 107

    Adonoy! bring back our exiles

  108. 108

    like springs in the desert.

  109. 109

Turn away from Your fierce anger

  110. 110

and let Your mind be changed

  111. 111

concerning the evil intended for Your people.

  112. 112

    Return Adonoy—how long?

  113. 113

and change Your mind about Your servants.

  114. 114

Return to us, God of our deliverance,

  115. 115

and annul Your anger toward us.

  116. 116

Enter not into judgement with us,

  117. 117

for no living soul will be justified before You.

  118. 118

As a father has compassion on his children

  119. 119

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  120. 120

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  121. 121

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  122. 122

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  123. 123

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  124. 124

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  125. 125

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  126. 126

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  127. 127

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  128. 128

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  129. 129

    in accordance with the greatness

  130. 130

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  131. 131

and as You forgave this people

  132. 132

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  133. 133

    And there it is said:

  134. 134

    “And Adonoy said,

  135. 135

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  136. 136

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  137. 137

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  138. 138

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  139. 139

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  140. 140

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  141. 141

but because of Your great mercy.

  142. 142

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  143. 143

My Master, listen and take action,

  144. 144

    do not delay!

  145. 145

    For Your sake, my God,

  146. 146

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  147. 147

over Your city and over Your people.
