Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · First Day, Chapter 4

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Shlomo ben Yehuda, HaBavli

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers.

  3. 3

There is none that offers righteous prayer,

  4. 4

    אִישׁ טוֹב נִמְשַׁל כְּחֶדֶק.

    the best of men is like a briar-thorn;

  5. 5

to seek compassion on those who are crushed—

  6. 6

no one [worthy] can be found.

  7. 7

The blameless and pure man has vanished,

  8. 8

    the pious man has disappeared

  9. 9

    וְצַדִּיק נִרְפַּס.

    and the righteous has been trampled;

  10. 10

thus a generation impoverished in good deeds

  11. 11

is held to account for its iniquities,

  12. 12

for there is none to direct its ways.

  13. 13

    Our sins have caused

  14. 14

    [God’s] wrath to be kindled,

  15. 15

[even against the righteous] who offered, as members of Your household

  16. 16

    לְהַפְעִיר.

    to pray and intercede for us;

  17. 17

and thus, who is there, great or small,

  18. 18

that is able to offer confession and prayer

  19. 19

to the Holy One Who is ever awake?

  20. 20

    I tremble and fear

  21. 21

to offer prayer on behalf of the congregation

  22. 22

to Him Who searches and probes [hearts;]

  23. 23

deficient in virtue and full of sin,

  24. 24

how can I find favor with my supplication?

  25. 25

You are good to those who call upon You

  26. 26

    with all their soul,

  27. 27

    טוֹרְחָם נְשֹׂא וּלְכַלְכֵּל יַהַב.

    You bear their burden and sustain them;

  28. 28

expand Your precious kindness upon me,

  29. 29

and give ear to my voice with Your love.

  30. 30

[Regard me] as one who is of worthy character

  31. 31

    and completely proficient in prayer,

  32. 32

as one who is mature and fluent

  33. 33

    and not as a boor,

  34. 34

consider my broken heart before You,

  35. 35

    מִלְּהִכָּלֵם.

    and let me not be ashamed;

  36. 36

for the sake of my relief,

  37. 37

    remember Your mercy—

  38. 38

    מֵהִתְעַלֵּם:

    let it not be concealed.

  39. 39

    Numerous are our needs,

  40. 40

    but they cannot be expressed

  41. 41

    because of our short-sightedness

  42. 42

    וּמֵרֹב מֶמֶר.

    and rebellious spirit;

  43. 43

but all is revealed to You

  44. 44

Who has formed us from clay,

  45. 45

[our] guide, shepherd, shelter and protector.

  46. 46

We are left like a single tree on a mountain

  47. 47

    in our solitude,

  48. 48

our glory has turned to rubbish and refuse,

  49. 49

answer us and sustain us in our servitude,

  50. 50

add to Your counted ones [Israel]

  51. 51

by seeking out those who are lost from us.

  52. 52

Those who are inflicted with pain

  53. 53

by the rods of Your chastisement,

  54. 54

    are scattered, dispersed

  55. 55

    וּבַגּוֹיִם עֲבוּטִים.

    and pawned among the nations;

  56. 56

    protect them in Your shelter

  57. 57

    from strife and punishment,

  58. 58

    for to behold Your glory

  59. 59

    is their hope and desire.

  60. 60

[God,] Whose powerful voice hews flames of fire,

  61. 61

Who decrees both good and its opposite,

  62. 62

Your beloved ones knock [at Your door]

  63. 63

    בְּקוֹל עָצֵב.

    with a sorrowful voice;

  64. 64

    accept their offer of prayer,

  65. 65

    and dwell among them.

  66. 66

They persevere in fasting [in order]

  67. 67

    to humble their hearts,

  68. 68

their multitude—from the wrath of judgement

  69. 69

    בַּחֲדָרֶיךָ תַצְנִיעַ.

    conceal them in Your chamber;

  70. 70

they beseech You in quiet prayer,

  71. 71

    lips whispering,

  72. 72

    withhold not their desire.

  73. 73

    Your Name O God

  74. 74

is glorified by Your desire to grant life,

  75. 75

we remain in good life because of You,

  76. 76

    מְקוֹר חַיִּים עִמְּךָ מִתְבָּאֵר.

    for the fountain of life flows from You;

  77. 77

look to us, and answer us,

  78. 78

    and enlighten our eyes.

  79. 79

    Almighty! King!

  80. 80

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  81. 81

    governs with kindness

  82. 82

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  83. 83

He removes their sins one by one,

  84. 84

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  85. 85

    and pardon to transgressors.

  86. 86

    Acting righteously

  87. 87

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  88. 88

    not according to their wickedness

  89. 89

    does He repay them.

  90. 90

    Almighty!

  91. 91

    You instructed us to recite

  92. 92

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  93. 93

    remember unto us this day

  94. 94

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  95. 95

    as You made them known

  96. 96

to the humble Moses of old,

  97. 97

    as it is written,

  98. 98

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  99. 99

    and stood with him there,

  100. 100

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  101. 101

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  102. 102

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  103. 103

    and proclaimed:

  104. 104

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  105. 105

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  106. 106

    Slow to Anger,

  107. 107

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  108. 108

    Keeper of kindness

  109. 109

    for thousands of generations,

  110. 110

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  111. 111

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  112. 112

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  113. 113

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  114. 114

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  115. 115

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  116. 116

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  117. 117

    “For You, my Master,

  118. 118

    are good and forgiving,

  119. 119

    and abounding in kindness

  120. 120

to all who call upon You.”

  121. 121

Do not enter into judgment with us,

  122. 122

for no living soul will be justified before You.

  123. 123

Let our prayer come before You

  124. 124

and be not concealed from our supplication.

  125. 125

    Let come before You,

  126. 126

    the groans of the prisoners,

  127. 127

    according to Your great might

  128. 128

    release those doomed to die.

  129. 129

    My Master, hear our voice.

  130. 130

    Let Your ears be attentive

  131. 131

to the voice of our supplication.

  132. 132

    Let Your ears be attentive

  133. 133

and let Your eyes be open—

  134. 134

to the plight of Your people Israel.

  135. 135

As a father has compassion on his children

  136. 136

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  137. 137

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  138. 138

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  139. 139

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  140. 140

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  141. 141

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  142. 142

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  143. 143

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  144. 144

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  145. 145

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  146. 146

    in accordance with the greatness

  147. 147

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  148. 148

and as You forgave this people

  149. 149

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  150. 150

    And there it is said:

  151. 151

    “And Adonoy said,

  152. 152

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  153. 153

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  154. 154

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  155. 155

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  156. 156

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  157. 157

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  158. 158

but because of Your great mercy.

  159. 159

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  160. 160

My Master, listen and take action,

  161. 161

    do not delay!

  162. 162

    For Your sake, my God,

  163. 163

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  164. 164

over Your city and over Your people.
