Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Fourth Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 10

‹›
  1. 1

  2. 2

I shall wail with my prayers,

  3. 3

with my prayers to my Creator.

  4. 4

To my Creator as I am bent [and submissive],

  5. 5

relying only on my spirit [prayers].

  6. 6

With my spirit [prayers] and my tongue,

  7. 7

with my tongue I shall express my shame,

  8. 8

    my shame before my Creator

  9. 9

    until my throat becomes parched.

  10. 10

My throat and my lips [can do good or evil],

  11. 11

    the lips have two options,

  12. 12

there are two paths that they may follow,

  13. 13

doors are open to each one of those paths.

  14. 14

    The doors open to repentance

  15. 15

to repentance from a rebellious heart,

  16. 16

    rebellious and wild,

  17. 17

for the daughter (Israel) who rebelled.

  18. 18

    Our Strength! we have sinned!

  19. 19

    Our Creator! forgive us!

  20. 20

The rebellious daughter’s body is bent,

  21. 21

    bent and suffering from pain,

  22. 22

    suffering and singed,

  23. 23

    singed and marked

  24. 24

    for destruction and death.

  25. 25

    Death and pain,

  26. 26

    pain inflicting great suffering,

  27. 27

    suffering which grips her,

  28. 28

as she goes forth in tears of anguish.

  29. 29

    Cries because of Your wrath,

  30. 30

from Your wrath and Your anger

  31. 31

    Your anger and Your strength

  32. 32

    gripped and leaned against me.

  33. 33

Over Israel Your wrath is full,

  34. 34

    full and weary,

  35. 35

    [she is] weary and broken

  36. 36

    and even defiled.

  37. 37

    Our Strength! we have sinned!

  38. 38

    Our Creator! forgive us!

  39. 39

    Defiled as is a metzoraas

  40. 40

as a metzoraas whose hair is uncovered

  41. 41

    vulnerable to afflictions1From the nations.

  42. 42

and pretending to be unaware of them.

  43. 43

She is aware of persecution but remains silent,

  44. 44

silent as if oblivious to a response,

  45. 45

as if totally unaware of their intentions

  46. 46

and covers her face from shame.

  47. 47

    Shame and disgrace

  48. 48

    have clung to her,

  49. 49

clung and fused as one with her,

  50. 50

until she is ready for holocaust.

  51. 51

    Imprisoned, she is incinerated,

  52. 52

    imprisoned she is decimated,

  53. 53

    decimated and forsaken,

  54. 54

and divorced from her husband (God).

  55. 55

    Our Strength! we have sinned!

  56. 56

    Our Creator! forgive us!

  57. 57

From her husband she was cast in disgrace,

  58. 58

    in disgrace for destruction,

  59. 59

for destruction in a land without shelter,

  60. 60

in which she cannot be exempt from suffering.

  61. 61

Cleansed and atoned of her sins

  62. 62

    complete atonement is not possible

  63. 63

for she lacks her Dwelling Place2The Temple.

  64. 64

and is cast asunder like a rebellious cow.

  65. 65

She rebels against her husband (God),

  66. 66

    and was deceitful against Him,

  67. 67

    she was so exceedingly deceitful

  68. 68

that there are not sufficient sacrifices for her.

  69. 69

A sacrifice of either an “olah” or “mincha”3Burnt-offering or meal-offering.

  70. 70

    is no longer possible

  71. 71

for Israel is forsaken and bemoaning

  72. 72

as a leper whose disease spread all over her.

  73. 73

    Our Strength! we have sinned!

  74. 74

    Our Creator! forgive us!

  75. 75

The defilement of nations has spread upon us,

  76. 76

    their defilement and jealousy.

  77. 77

Please, God, vent Your jealousy upon them

  78. 78

    because Israel thirsts for You.

  79. 79

    My soul thirsts for You,

  80. 80

for you to provide tranquility for my soul,

  81. 81

to save me from the dung of exile,

  82. 82

    my God, my Holy One.

  83. 83

My Holy One, and my Savior,

  84. 84

my Savior from those who persecute me,

  85. 85

replace my persecutors by delighting me,

  86. 86

    God, my Shepherd.

  87. 87

    My Shepherd and my God,

  88. 88

    my God and my Rescuer.

  89. 89

Let my Rescuer permit me to inherit

  90. 90

[the land of Israel,] my vineyard.

  91. 91

    Our Strength! we have sinned!

  92. 92

    Our Creator! forgive us!

  93. 93

    My disgrace is also Yours,

  94. 94

    וְשֶׁלָּךְ לְמוּלָךְ.

    and Yours is obviously opposite You;

  95. 95

    against You,

  96. 96

    they have committed abominations

  97. 97

    and their tongues were slanderous.

  98. 98

The people for whom You split the Reed Sea,

  99. 99

    and then passed them through,

  100. 100

    thereby granting them added esteem,

  101. 101

this people that You created [to serve You].

  102. 102

You created Your laws for me,

  103. 103

please choose the rightness of my prayers,

  104. 104

    those prayers

  105. 105

with which I am entreating my God,

  106. 106

O God, Adonoy Who gives me strength.

  107. 107

My God Who gives me strength, strengthen us,

  108. 108

    strengthen us and fortify us.

  109. 109

    Our King, please fortify us,

  110. 110

    Adonoy Who rules over us.

  111. 111

    Our Strength! we have sinned!

  112. 112

    Our Creator! forgive us!

  113. 113

Remember to us the covenant of the Patriarchs,

  114. 114

    as You promised,

  115. 115

“And I will remember my covenant with Jacob,

  116. 116

and also my covenant with Isaac,

  117. 117

and also my covenant with Abraham

  118. 118

    will I remember,”

  119. 119

and the land I will remember.

  120. 120

Remember to us the covenant of the ancestors,

  121. 121

    as You promised,

  122. 122

“And I will remember for their sake,

  123. 123

    the covenant with their ancestors,

  124. 124

    whom I brought out

  125. 125

    of the land of Egypt,

  126. 126

    לְעֵינֵי הַגּוֹיִם

    in the sight of the nations;

  127. 127

    to be their God

  128. 128

    I am Adonoy.”

  129. 129

Do unto us as You promised,

  130. 130

    “And yet for all that,

  131. 131

when they are in the land of their enemies,

  132. 132

    I will not reject them

  133. 133

and I will not abhor them, to destroy them,

  134. 134

    לְהָפֵר בְּרִיתִי אִתָּם

    to annul My covenant with them;

  135. 135

for I am Adonoy, their God.”

  136. 136

Be accessible to us when we seek You,

  137. 137

    as it is written:

  138. 138

    “And from there

  139. 139

you will seek Adonoy, your God,

  140. 140

    וּמָצָֽאתָ

    and you will find Him;

  141. 141

    if you search after Him

  142. 142

    with all your heart

  143. 143

    and with all your soul.”

  144. 144

    Open our hearts

  145. 145

    to love Your Name,

  146. 146

as it is written in Your Torah:

  147. 147

“And Adonoy, your God will open your heart,

  148. 148

and the heart of your descendants,

  149. 149

    to love Adonoy, your God,

  150. 150

    with all your heart,

  151. 151

    and with all your soul,

  152. 152

    that you may live.”

  153. 153

    Sprinkle clean water upon us,

  154. 154

and cleanse us, as it is written:

  155. 155

“And I will sprinkle clean water upon you,

  156. 156

    וּטְהַרְתֶּם

    and you will be clean;

  157. 157

    from all your defilements,

  158. 158

    and from all your idols,

  159. 159

    I will cleanse you.”

  160. 160

    Sweep aside our transgressions

  161. 161

as a thick cloud and as a mist,

  162. 162

    as You have promised:

  163. 163

“I have swept away like a thick cloud

  164. 164

    your transgressions,

  165. 165

    וְכֶעָנָן חַטֹּאתֶֽיךָ

    and like a mist, your sins;

  166. 166

return to Me, for I have redeemed You.”

  167. 167

Blot out our transgressions for Your sake,

  168. 168

    as You promised:

  169. 169

    “I, I [alone] am He

  170. 170

    Who blots out your transgressions

  171. 171

    לְמַעֲנִי

    for My own sake;

  172. 172

and your sins, I will not recall.”

  173. 173

Make our sins as white as snow or wool,

  174. 174

    as it is written:

  175. 175

“Come now, let us reason together,

  176. 176

    says Adonoy,

  177. 177

though your sins be as scarlet,

  178. 178

    כַּשֶּֽׁלֶג יַלְבִּֽינוּ

    they shall be as white as snow;

  179. 179

though they be red as crimson,

  180. 180

they shall become [white] as wool.”

  181. 181

Have compassion on us and do not destroy us,

  182. 182

    as it is written:

  183. 183

“For an Almighty of mercy is Adonoy,

  184. 184

    אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ

    your God;

  185. 185

He will not abandon you or destroy you,

  186. 186

    and He will not forget

  187. 187

    the covenant of your fathers

  188. 188

    which He swore to them.”

  189. 189

Gather our dispersed ones, as it is written:

  190. 190

    “If your dispersed

  191. 191

are in the farthermost part of heaven,

  192. 192

from there Adonoy, your God will gather you,

  193. 193

and from there He will take you.”

  194. 194

    Bring back our captivity

  195. 195

    and have compassion on us,

  196. 196

    as it is written:

  197. 197

“And Adonoy, your God will return

  198. 198

    אֶת שְׁבוּתְךָ וְרִחֲמֶֽךָ

    your captivity and have compassion on you;

  199. 199

and He will again gather you

  200. 200

    from [among] all the peoples,

  201. 201

where Adonoy, your God has scattered you.”

  202. 202

Bring us to Your holy mountain,

  203. 203

and make us joyful in Your House of Prayer,

  204. 204

    as it is written:

  205. 205

“And I will bring them to My holy mountain,

  206. 206

    וְשִׂמַּחְתִּים בְּבֵית תְּפִלָּתִי

    and make them joyful in My House of Prayer;

  207. 207

    their burnt-offerings and sacrifices

  208. 208

will be accepted with favor on My Altar,

  209. 209

    for My House,

  210. 210

will be called a House of Prayer

  211. 211

    for all peoples.”
