Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Second Day, Chapter 3

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Shlomo ben Yehuda, HaBavli

  2. 2

Our God, and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

Even if our iniquities are great and magnified,

  4. 4

    if their testimony against us

  5. 5

is strong like woven strands of rope,

  6. 6

    גָּרְמוּ לָנוּ בֵּינָתַיִם לְהַבְדִּיל.

    creating a separation between us;

  7. 7

    דַּרְכֵי רַחֲמֶיךָ

    let Your ways of compassion

  8. 8

    not be withheld from us.

  9. 9

You affirmed to govern with kindliness,

  10. 10

and You have always been, from of old.

  11. 11

    זְכֹר עֲדָתְךָ אֲשֶׁר קָנִיתָ.

    Remember Your community that You acquired;

  12. 12

take pity on the remnant of those [Israel]

  13. 13

whom You called Your first born.

  14. 14

    You carried us [up high]

  15. 15

to the city [Jerusalem] and implanted us there.

  16. 16

You caused us to dwell [in the city]

  17. 17

built of strong and mighty stones.

  18. 18

    Abruptly You cast us down

  19. 19

to a place [where our enemies]

  20. 20

    [attack us] like serpents.

  21. 21

Bring forth the relief that we await.

  22. 22

The many [evil] episodes and dreadful panic

  23. 23

have caused my soul to abhor life.

  24. 24

[My life has become] loathsome as dirt.

  25. 25

Support our bodies, dragged to the ground.

  26. 26

Awaken, why do You slumber?3See previous note.

  27. 27

    You are our [only] hope!

  28. 28

Open [Your eyes,] remove our shackles,

  29. 29

call to Your imprisoned ones with affection.

  30. 30

    צוֹק הָעִתִּים חֶשְׁבּוֹנָם קְפֹץ.

    Hurry, shorten their sentence of oppression;

  31. 31

    gather Your dispersed ones,

  32. 32

    עֵדֶר הַנָּפֹץ.

    Your scattered flock;

  33. 33

    when they see [Your deliverance,]

  34. 34

the mouths of the unjust will close [in shame].

  35. 35

    Preserve the oath of kindness,

  36. 36

    and the stipulation

  37. 37

You made with the perfect one [Jacob],

  38. 38

with [Isaac], whose ashes are on the Altar,

  39. 39

and with the builder of the Altar [Abraham],

  40. 40

all of whom were mighty in their trust in You.

  41. 41

    Command Your peace with us

  42. 42

    לִבְלִי גְנַאי.

    that we be not disgraced;

  43. 43

turn about and change the evil time for good.

  44. 44

Jacob [the nation of Israel] is small and poor.

  45. 45

We are known to be ill, despised and worthless.

  46. 46

    חַיִּים וָחֶסֶד

    Grant them life and kindness;

  47. 47

    be their stronghold and tower.

  48. 48

    And even now,

  49. 49

let Your power of deliverance be magnified.

  50. 50

    Almighty! King!

  51. 51

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  52. 52

    governs with kindness

  53. 53

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  54. 54

He removes their sins one by one,

  55. 55

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  56. 56

    and pardon to transgressors.

  57. 57

    Acting righteously

  58. 58

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  59. 59

    not according to their wickedness

  60. 60

    does He repay them.

  61. 61

    Almighty!

  62. 62

    You instructed us to recite

  63. 63

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  64. 64

    remember unto us this day

  65. 65

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  66. 66

    as You made them known

  67. 67

to the humble Moses of old,

  68. 68

    as it is written,

  69. 69

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  70. 70

    and stood with him there,

  71. 71

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  72. 72

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  73. 73

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  74. 74

    and proclaimed:

  75. 75

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  76. 76

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  77. 77

    Slow to Anger,

  78. 78

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  79. 79

    Keeper of kindness

  80. 80

    for thousands of generations,

  81. 81

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  82. 82

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  83. 83

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  84. 84

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  85. 85

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  86. 86

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  87. 87

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  88. 88

    “For You, my Master,

  89. 89

    are good and forgiving,

  90. 90

    and abounding in kindness

  91. 91

to all who call upon You.”

  92. 92

Even for the ways of Your judgements, Adonoy,

  93. 93

    we hope for You.

  94. 94

The greatness of Your Name and Your mention

  95. 95

    is our soul’s desire.

  96. 96

    We hope for You, Adonoy,

  97. 97

turn to us and hear our cry.

  98. 98

And now, what is our hope, Adonoy?

  99. 99

Our yearning is for You[r deliverance].

  100. 100

    אַךְ אֶל אֱלֹהִים דּוּמִיָּה נַפְשֵׁנוּ

    Only for God does our soul yearn;

  101. 101

from Him will come our deliverance.

  102. 102

As the stag cries out in thirst

  103. 103

    for the springs of water,

  104. 104

so do our souls cry out in thirst

  105. 105

    for You, O God.

  106. 106

[May] only good and kindness pursue us

  107. 107

all the days of our lives,

  108. 108

and we shall dwell in the House of Adonoy

  109. 109

    for long days.

  110. 110

As a father has compassion on his children

  111. 111

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  112. 112

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  113. 113

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  114. 114

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  115. 115

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  116. 116

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  117. 117

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  118. 118

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  119. 119

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  120. 120

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  121. 121

    in accordance with the greatness

  122. 122

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  123. 123

and as You forgave this people

  124. 124

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  125. 125

    And there it is said:

  126. 126

    “And Adonoy said,

  127. 127

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  128. 128

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  129. 129

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  130. 130

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  131. 131

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  132. 132

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  133. 133

but because of Your great mercy.

  134. 134

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  135. 135

My Master, listen and take action,

  136. 136

    do not delay!

  137. 137

    For Your sake, my God,

  138. 138

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  139. 139

over Your city and over Your people.
