It is written, “The burnt offering of the Sabbath beside (‘al, lit. upon) the continual burnt offering” (Num. 28, 10). Similarly it is written, “And Hannah prayed to (‘al, lit. upon) the Lord” (I Sam. 1, 19), because children depend upon the holy mazzal, as we have pointed out.’

So, too, at the renewal of the moon, because the sun illumines her with the joyful light of the Ancient One above.
אוּף הָכִי בְּחַדְתּוּתֵי סִיהֲרָא, דְּהָא נָהִיר לָהּ שִׁמְשָׁא בְּחֶדְוָותָא דִּנְהִירוּ דְעַתִּיקָא לְעֵילָּא. בְּגִינֵי כַּךְ הַאי קָרְבְּנָא הוּא לְעֵילָּא, בְּגִין דְּיִתְבְּסַם כֹּלָּא, וְיִשְׁתְּכַּח חֶדְוָותָא בְּעָלְמָא, וְעַל דָּא הָבִיאוּ עָלַי כַּפָּרָה, דַּיְיקָא מִלָּה.
Therefore the offering of new moon is an atonement above.
