תָּא חֲזֵי, אַף עַל גַּב דִּבִנֵי אַהֲרֹן מִיתוּ בְּהַהִֹיא שַׁעֲתָא, יָאוּת הֲוָה בְּכַמָּה גַּוְונִין. חֲדָא, דְּלָא הֲוָה שַׁעֲתָא דִּקְטֹרֶת, דְּהָא קְטֹרֶת לָא סַלְּקָא, אֶלָּא בְּזִמְנִין יְדִיעָן, דִּכְתִיב (שמות ל׳:ז׳) וְהִקְטִיר עָלָיו אַהֲרֹן קְטֹרֶת סַמִּים בַּבֹּקֶר בַּבֹּקֶר. וְאֵימָתַי בְּהֵטִיבוֹ אֶת הַנֵּרוֹת וְגוֹ' לְאִשְׁתַּכְחָא שֶׁמֶן וּקְטֹרֶת כַּחֲדָא. וּכְתִיב וּבְהַעֲלוֹת אַהֲרֹן אֶת הַנֵּרוֹת בֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִם יַקְטִירֶנָּה וְגוֹ'.

and had it not been for the misfortune of the sons of Aaron, there would have been no day when God was more pleased with Israel from the time they left Egypt. And the death of the sons of Aaron was deserved for many reasons.

וּבְזִמְנִין אִלֵּין אִתְקְרִיב, וְלָא בְּזִמְנָא אָחֳרָא, בַּר בְּזִמְנָא דְּמוֹתָנָא שַׁרְיָא בְּעָלְמָא, כְּמָה דְּאִעְרַע דִּכְתִיב (במדבר י״ז:י״א) וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל אַהֲרֹן קַח אֶת הַמַּחְתָּה וְתֵן עָלֶיהָ אֵשׁ וְגוֹ'. וּבְנֵי אַהֲרֹן לָא קְרִיבוּ בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּשֶמֶן וּקְטֹרֶת מִשְׁתַּכְחֵי כַּחֲדָא.

One was that they offered incense at the wrong time-at a time when oil and incense were not together (i.e. not when the lamp was lit, v. Ex. 30, 7).

וְעוֹד דְּדָחֲקוּ שַׁעֲתָא בְּחַיֵּי דַּאֲבוּהוֹן. וְעוֹד דְּלָא אַנְסִיבוּ, וַהֲווּ פְּגִימִין, דְּמַאן דְּלָא אַנְסִיב, פָּגִים הוּא, וְלָאו הוּא כְּדַאי לְאִשְׁתַּכְחָא בִּרְכָאן בְּעָלְמָא עַל יְדוֹי, עֲלוֹי לָא שַׁרְיָין, כָּל שֶׁכֵּן עַל יְדוֹי לַאֲחֵרִים. וְעוֹד, דְּהָא תְּנָן רְוָּוי חַמְרָא הֲווֹ, וּבְגִין כַּךְ, וַתֵּצֵא אֵשׁ מִלִּפְנֵי יְיָ' וַתֹּאכַל אוֹתָם וְגוֹ'. דְּהָא קְטֹרֶת חָבִיב הוּא מִכֹּלָּא, וְחֶדְוָותָא דְּעִלָּאִין וְתַתָּאִין, וּכְתִיב (משלי כ״ז:ט׳) שֶׁמֶן וּקְטֹרֶת יְשַׂמַּח לֵב.

Another was that they thrust themselves forward in the place of their father. A third was that they were not married; for such are not meet to bring blessings into the world. And a fourth was that they were intoxicated with wine.
