Answer. I have already made known to you that Ein Sof is perfection without deficiency, and that He possesses the power of limitation without being limited. The limit emanated from Him, which sets bounds to every existent thing, consists of the sefirot and they possess the power to act both toward perfection and toward deficiency. Had He not brought forth a limit for them, we would not have known that He possessed the power to bring forth limitation. In order to bear witness that nothing exists outside Him, He brought forth the limit, for limited things are recognized through their limitation. Although there is no limit above, the intimation apprehended by reflection comes from Ein Sof, who is exalted and concealed beyond extension within limitation. Within the limit lies everything that can be apprehended by the reflection of the heart and intimated by thought, which extends downward until it finds expression in speech and becomes manifest in action. Everything that enters within limitation possesses measure and corporeality, for every existent thing apprehended by the reflection of the heart is called a “body,” even spirit. Therefore, the sefirot, which comprise the totality of everything limited, are the root of limitation. That limit was emanated from the Limitless, therefore, it is said: “Their measure is ten, yet they have no end.” The masters of philosophical inquiry have said that the human intellect possesses a limit, and from ordinary experience we observe that every thing possesses a limit, a proportion, and a measure.
