"וַחֲמִשִּׁים אַמָּה מִגְרָשׁאמגרש לו סביב - בכל ארבעת הרוחות יהיה מגרש חמשים אמה: (מצ”ד) מגרש - ענינו מקום פנוי מבלי זריעה ואילנות וכן ומגרש לערים (במדבר ל”ה): (מצ”צ) לוֹ סָבִיב" (יחזקאל מה, ב).
“There were 50 cubits of open space around it.”1Yechezkel, 43:12. I.e., there were 50 cubits of empty space around the enclosure of the Temple Mount. The gloss of Metzudos Tziyon emphasizes that this land should not be planted with crops or trees.
