And thus one must take care, when he asks his friend for a favor and the other declines, not to ask him: "Why did you do this for Ploni? He himself told me" — for this is also likely to arouse the friend's resentment against Ploni for having revealed the thing to others, whom he [now] cannot refuse.
וְכֵן יֵשׁ לִזָּהֵר, כְּשֶׁמְּבַקֵּשׁ מֵאֵת חֲבֵרוֹ, שֶׁיֵּיטִיב עִמּוֹ בְּאֵיזֶה דָּבָר, וְהוּא מְשִׁיבוֹ, שֶׁאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לְמַלְּאוֹת בַּקָּשָׁתוֹ בָּזֶה, (ג) שֶׁלֹּא יִשְׁאָלֵנוּ: לָמָּה עָשִׂיתָ טוֹבָה זוֹ לִפְלוֹנִי, (ד) שֶׁהוּא בְּעַצְמוֹ סִפֵּר לִי אֶת הַדָּבָר, כִּי מָּצּוּי הוּא עַל יְדֵי דָּבָר כָּזֶה גַּם כֵּן לְהַעֲלוֹת תַּרְעוֹמוֹת בְּלֵב חֲבֵרוֹ עַל אוֹתוֹ פְּלוֹנִי, עַל שֶׁגִּלָּה אֶת הַדָּבָר לַאֲנָשִׁים וְאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לְהַשְׁמִיט עַצְמוֹ מֵהֶם.
