There are watches in the heavens for heavenly matters -- that is, for the service of Hashem, may He be blessed, just as there are [such watches] below [on Earth] in lower matters and in working the land. These are truly parallel, and from it we should take [a lesson] in the service of Hashem [at that time] in this manner. A sign for the first watch [is that] the donkey brays. The physical [analogous to the donkey; along these lines they said "a people resembling a donkey"] also brays like a donkey [under] the burden of mitzvot through the faculties of action. [A sign for the] second [watch] - dogs bark. As is said in the Zohar, [the people] cry out like a dog, in prayer [and dogs are brazen, and likewise chutzpah (brazenness) in prayer toward heaven is effective, as is said in Taanit 8a]. As they said (Shabbat 155b), "there is none that is poorer than a dog" -- [that is, one that is] poor in understanding, and he has nothing except prayer as is said in Shemot Rabbah (Chapter 38): "They said to him, 'we do not know'", etc., see there. [A sign for the] third [watch] - the baby suckles. That is, Torah, as they said in the chapter Arvei Pesachim (Pesachim 112a): "More than the calf wants to suckle", for the Torah is compared with milk. And "a woman [converses with her husband] etc." [see also Berakhot 3a] - this refers to Torah, as they said in Yevamot 63b. However, [in the image of nursing], the woman nurses, and this [represents] the great sages of Israel, and the schoolchildren receive from them. And these [three watches/three forms of service represented by them are] Torah, [divine] service [i.e. prayer], and acts of kindness [and likewise Torah, prayer, and sacrifices (that is, action), in Shemot Rabbah there], which correspond to thought, speech, and action, as explained elsewhere. Except at night, during the time of darkness, they are reversed, as explained elsewhere.
