Tzidkat HaTzadik · Chapter 16

‹›
  1. 1

A mitzvah-act that one does out of doubt has the sanctity of Hashem, may He be blessed, upon it. Certainly, one is obligated to do it due to the doubt, like the second day of Yom Tov. And see Shabbat 23a, that we recite blessings [containing] "who has sanctified us with His commandments" when we are in doubt, except for demai, as most ignorant people [do in fact tithe] [see what I have written regarding this law in my writings]. [This is] similar to what is said in a response of the Ran cited in Beis Yosef, Yoreh De'ah Chapter 228: since, because of the doubt, one is obligated [to act] [and see what I have wrote on this in my writings]. And this is also implied in the language of the Gemara Berachot 2b: "from the time that the day is sanctified on the eve of Shabbat". See there in Rashi, [who explains] that this is twilight and it is called "the day has become sanctified" through the sanctity of Shabbat. [And regarding the time of twilight one may say this also of Shabbat: Israel sanctifies Shabbat, even though it is fixed and established, the stringency due to the doubt comes from Israel]. For whenever the children of Israel take upon themselves a stringency to do something as a mitzvah, it becomes a mitzvah and has sanctity.
