Now, the soul yearns continuously to do the will of her Creator. When she sees that the person does not want to do God’s will, Heaven forbid, then she yearns greatly to return to her source. She begins to draw herself [to there] and to depart from the person’s body. This is what makes a person sick: due to the weakening of the soul that results from her drawing herself away from him because he did not do what she wanted. For she wants only that he do the will of the Omnipresent, blessed be He.
That a person is restored to health by means of medications is the result of the soul seeing that this person is capable of overcoming his desires and his habits. For he is accustomed to eating bread and other foods, and now overcomes his desire and takes bitter cures and medications for the sake of his health. As a result of the soul seeing that he is capable of overcoming his desire for the sake of some goal, she returns to him in anticipation that he will overcome his desire for the sake of the true goal—to do the will of his Blessed Creator.
כְּשֶׁאֵין הָאָדָם מִסְתַּכֵּל עַל הַתַּכְלִית, לָמָּה לוֹ חַיִּים.
If a person does not focus on the goal, why is he alive?
וְהִנֵּה הַנֶּפֶשׁ מִתְגַּעְגַּעַת תָּמִיד לַעֲשׂוֹת רְצוֹן יוֹצְרָהּ, וּכְשֶׁרוֹאֶה שֶׁאֵין הָאָדָם עוֹשֶׂה רְצוֹנוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, אֲזַי הִיא מִתְגַּעְגֵּעַ מְאֹד לַחֲזֹר לְשָׁרְשָׁהּ, וּמַתְחֶלֶת לְהַמְשִׁיךְ עַצְמָהּ לְהִסְתַּלֵּק מִגּוּף הָאָדָם, וּמִזֶּה נֶחֱלֶה הָאָדָם, עַל יְדֵי שֶׁנֵּחֱלָשׁ כֹּחַ הַנֶּפֶשׁ, עַל יְדֵי שֶׁמַּמְשֶׁכֶת עַצְמָהּ מִמֶּנּוּ מֵחֲמַת שֶׁאֵין מְמַלֵּא רְצוֹנָהּ, כִּי הִיא רוֹצָה רַק שֶׁיַּעֲשֶׂה רְצוֹן הַמָּקוֹם בָּרוּךְ הוּא:

וּמַה שֶּׁהָאָדָם חוֹזֵר לִבְרִיאוּתוֹ עַל יְדֵי רְפוּאוֹת, הוּא מֵחֲמַת שֶׁהַנֶּפֶשׁ רוֹאָה שֶׁזֶּה הָאָדָם יָכוֹל לָכֹף עַצְמוֹ לַעֲשׂוֹת הֶפֶךְ תַּאֲוָתוֹ וּרְגִילוּתוֹ, כִּי הוּא מֻרְגָּל בַּאֲכִילַת לֶחֶם וּשְׁאָר מַאֲכָלִים, וְעַכְשָׁו כּוֹפֶה תַּאֲוָתוֹ וּמְקַבֵּל רְפוּאוֹת וְסַמִּים מָרִים בִּשְׁבִיל בְּרִיאוּתוֹ, וּמֵחֲמַת שֶׁהַנֶּפֶשׁ רוֹאָה שֶׁהוּא יָכוֹל לָכֹף תַּאֲוָתוֹ בִּשְׁבִיל אֵיזֶה תַּכְלִית, עַל כֵּן הִיא חוֹזֶרֶת אֵלָיו, כִּי הִיא מְצַפָּה שֶׁיָּכֹף תַּאֲוָתוֹ בִּשְׁבִיל הַתַּכְלִית הָאֲמִתִּי – לַעֲשׂוֹת רְצוֹן יוֹצְרוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ:
