יש שני מיני מוסר אחד לתלמידי חכמים ואחד להמוני עם, ולכל אחד צריך לומר לפי בחינתו ומדרגתו וכמו שאמרו בזוהר הקדוש (יתרו דע"ט ע"ב) כה תאמר לבית יעקב ותגד לבני ישראל וכו', שצריך להזהיר על שום פנייה חיצונית לתלמידי חכמים, מה שאין כן להמוני עם שרי, שזהו כוונת חכמינו ז"ל (פסחים ד"נ ע"ב) לעולם יעסוק אדם בתורה שלא לשמה שמתוך וכו', ובזה שמעתי מהרב המגיד מו"ה מנחם מענדל ענין פרה אדומה שמטמא טהורים ומטהר טמאים וכו' ודפח"ח: (תוי"י ריש פ' אמור דק"י ע"א).
There are two types of rebuke, one for Torah scholars and the other for the masses. Each must be addressed according to his particular nature and spiritual level, as the Zohar says on the verse: “‘Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel” (Exodus 19:3).1Zohar 2:79b. Scholars must be cautioned not to have the slightest ulterior motive [when serving G‑d], whereas for the masses, this would be permitted, as the Sages said: “A person should always study Torah even with ulterior motives, for this will bring him to study it for selfless motives.”2Pesachim 50b.
