שמעתי בשם הקדוש והנורא הבעל שם טוב ז"ל שהקשה הלא כמה פעמים הזהירו רבותינו ז"ל על לשון הרע, ואיך אמרו הם בעצמם בגמרא (ב"ב דקס"ה ע"א) רובם בגזל כולם באבק לשון הרע, ופירש הוא ז"ל, שהגמרא מלמדת זכות על ישראל, ואמרו דרך תפלה, רבונו של עולם עד מתי לא תרחם על ישראל להוציא אותם מגלות המר, שכבר נשתקעו כל כך בין הקליפות, ויש להם מסכים גדולים ומניעות גדולות, וכל מה שיתארך הגלות יפלו ח"ו יותר בטומאה לכן מהר נא לגאלינו עכ"ד: (תולדות אהרן פ' שמות).
We find many instances in which the Sages [of the Talmud] speak against lashon hara.7Literally, “evil speech” – slander, gossip and tale-bearing. How, then, did they themselves say: “Most people commit theft, and everyone speaks the “dust” of lashon hara.”8Bava Basra 165a. The “dust” of lashon hara means those subtle innuendos that everyone makes, even those careful not to speak overt lashon hara. Yet, by making this statement, the Sages themselves seem to be saying lashon hara about the Jewish people. Actually, the Talmud is judging Israel favorably. They said this as a prayer: “Master of the World! How long until you show compassion on Israel, and take them out of this bitter exile? They have already sunken so deeply among the impure shells, and face such great concealment and obstacles. The longer You draw out the exile, the deeper they will fall into impurity, G-d forbid. Hurry, please, and redeem them!” Toldos Aharon, Shemos
