A person can attain a level of spiritual realization as great as that of the Tannaim and Amoraim,15Sages of the Land of Israel and Babylonia, from the first to fifth centuries; the authors of the Mishna and Talmud. were it not for his pride. Depression also is the result of pride, for a person thinks, “According to my great stature, and since I am such an important person, I should be enthusiastic [in my prayers].”16But since he is not, he falls into depression.
