שמעתי מפי קדשו של מורי החסיד האלקי הבעל שם טוב ז"ל שהזהיר על הזריזות והזהירות בעסק התפלה לאנשים כערכנו, בכדי שינצל מן מחשבות זרות, ואמר בשם גיסו הרב החסיד מו"ה גרשון קוטיבער ז"ל שאמר משל יפה על האנשים וכו' שאינם מרגישים כלל בתפלתם אם היו במחשבה זרה או לאו, ואמר משל, כי היה דרך אחד מסוכן מאוד, והוא שהיה צריך לילך דרך יעד שהיו שם מחבואות של גזלנים ושודדים, שהיו מצפים לאיזה עובר ושב, ואז קמו ממחבואיהם וגזלו וחמסו וטרפו ועשו בו פצעים וחבורות, וכל מי שהיה מוכרח לילך דרך היער היה מהלך במרוצה גדולה מאוד, שלא יהיה להשודדים פנאי לילך ולבא אליו ממחבואיהם שישבו בהם, פעם אחת נסעו שני אנשים בחבורה אחת, והיה אחד מהם שתוי ושיכור מאוד, והשני לא כן היה רק כדרך כל הארץ, והנה בנסעם דרך היער הזה, זה שהיה לשם בשכלו נסע במהירות גדול עד שעבר בשלום את היער בלי פגע, וחבירו השני השיכור הלך לאט לאט פסיעה אחר פסיעה, והרוצחים היו טורפים אותו והכו אותו ועשו בו חבלות ופצעים והוא לא הרגיש בדבר כלל מחמת שכרותו הגדול, ואחר זה פגעו זה בזה, ועמד הראשון ותמה את עצמו על זה השני ושאל אותו איך ניצלת שלא המיתו אותך בהכאות גדולות שעשו לך, והשני השיכור היה מתמה את עצמו על תמיהתו של זה, ואמר שאינו יודע שום דבר שעשו לו, כי לדעתו הלך בלי פגע, עד שהראשון הראה לו במראה את הפצעים והחבורות שבכל אבריו, וגם כתמים מן הדם שהיה שותת על בגדיו מן הפצעים והחבורות והוא נשאר בתמיהתו ואינו זוכר כלל והנמשל מובן מעצמו: (דברי משה פ' בא)
I heard from my Teacher, the Baal Shem Tov, about the alacrity and precaution that people on our level must exert in prayer, in order to be saved from foreign thoughts. The Baal Shem Tov told a parable in the name of his brother-in-law, Rabbi Gershon Kutover, concerning people who do not even realize that their prayers are full of extraneous thoughts. There was a very dangerous road that passed through a forest. Hidden in the woods were enclaves of murderers and bandits, just waiting for travelers to pass by. They would emerge from their hiding places and rob and beat them. A person who had to pass through this forest would do so at top speed, so that the bandits would be able to get him. Once, two men set out on the road together. One was very drunk, and the other not. As they passed through the woods, the sober man traveled at great speed until he passed through the forest safely. His friend, the drunk, however trod on step-by-step through the forest. The murderers grabbed hold of him, beat him, and wounded him; yet he did not feel a thing due to his great intoxication. When the two friends met later, the first one couldn’t believe what happened to the second. He asked him how he had survived all the blows he received. But the drunk was amazed at his friend’s amazement, and professed that he wasn’t aware of anything having happened. To his mind, he passed through the forest without harm. Finally, the first one showed him in a mirror all of his wounds and bruises, and the blood spots on his clothing. But he was still amazed, since he didn’t remember anything.
