שמעתי בשם הבעל שם טוב זללה"ה שהיה אומר עבירה גדולה ביד הציבור, כשהש"ץ אינו מאריך בניגונים ורוצה לסיים איזה ענין מהתפלה, והם מאריכים בתפלתם, ומעכבים על ידו מלהשפיע, ואם ימתין עד כלותם ויסיימו הציבור תפלתם, בין כך ובין כך יחליש המוחין אצלו, ולא יהיו לו אחד כך מוחין חזקים להשפיע אל השכינה, ואם כן, מה מאוד צריכין הציבור להזהר ולהשמר שלא יגרמו ככה ח"ו ויאבדו טובה הרבה, וכיוון שכן ראה גם ראה, אשר מלאכה גדולה ועובדא כבדה הוא בין שניהם, הש"ץ עם הציבור, לדעת איך יתנהגו בענייני התפלה, וביד הש"ץ ביותר: (אור המאיר פ' תצוה ד"ה ואתה תצוה)
The congregation sins greatly by drawing out their prayers and not allow the prayer-leader to conclude a section of the liturgy he wants to finish. They prevent him from bestowing.53The prayer-leader acts as a channel for drawing down blessing to the Shechinah, which then passes it on to the entire congregation. For if he has to wait for the congregation to finish, his mind will become weak, and he will lack the concentration to bestow upon the Shechinah. Therefore, the congregation must be very careful not to cause this, for they will lose much good. Indeed, it demands great and serious effort on behalf of the prayer-leader and the congregation, to know how to act during prayer, with the prayer-leader bearing the greater responsibility.
