בגמרא (יומא דפ"ו ע"ב) היכי דמי בעל תשובה כו' באותה שעה באותו פרק באותו מקום, שמעתי בשם ריב"ש ז"ל שהקשו במתיבתא דרקיע, הלא כשהלך לעבור עם אותה אשה עברה, הלך בחציפות ושחק עם האשה עד שבאו לידי עברה, ועכשיו כשבאו לעשות תשובה, והלך לאותו מקום שהאשה שם הולך בכפיפות ראש בצניעות, כדי למאוס ולשנוא את העברה, אם כן איך הוא תשובה גמורה, שאינו דומה לעשיית העברה, ותירצו במתיבתא דרקיע שבאמת התירו לו וכו': (רב ייבי בתהלים ל"ו).
What is the definition of a ba’al teshuva? Rav Yehuda said, “For instance, when the opportunity for sin comes his way a first and a second time and he is saved from it.… Rav Yehuda said: “With the same woman, at the same time, in the same place.”4Yoma 86b. The Heavenly Academy raised a question about this: When a person is about to sin with that woman, he does so brazenly, laughing with her, until they sin. Now, when he repents, he goes to the place of the woman feeling ashamed and in secrecy, so that the sin should be despicable to him. How, then, is this complete teshuva, since it doesn’t resemble the original transgression? The answer the Heavenly Assembly gave was that, in truth, they let him…5That is, they let him experience the same lusts and emotions so that he enteres a similar situation as before.
