I heard from my Master that the letter aleph is the mystery of the Alupho shel Olam (the Master of the World) which is hidden within it. The letter beis is two alephs, and the letter gimel is three alephs, until the letter tav, which is four hundred alephs. Therefore, in its root, the letter of the Torah which is closest to the spiritual life-force of the light of the Infinite is the letter aleph. Afterward, it descends and becomes enclothed subsequent letters, and becomes distant from the life-force, until it reaches the letter tav, which is Malchus of Malchus, where it becomes enclothed in evil and foreign thoughts. Tzaddikim, however, are agents of the “Matron”9An appellation for the Shechinah, the Divine Presence. who are sent to bind themselves to the letters and to elevate them in their thought to the Supernal Thought. Then they uplift the sparks of the Shechinah that were enclothed there from the depths to the highest realm. This is known as “learning with selfless intent” (limud l’shema). Thus, he merits many things.10Pirkei Avos 6:1: “Rabbi Meir said: Whoever toils at Torah for its own sake merit many things. Not only that, he is worth the entire world having been created on his account. He is called a friend [of G‑d], beloved, a lover of G‑d, a lover of creatures...” For within each letter, there are numerous levels, and he purifies them to uplift them, and becomes purified with them.
